As some of you may know, Dan’s photography skills have landed him a prime spot behind the scenes. While he may never complain about it, even the most passionate of photographers occasionally want to put down the lens and simply enjoy the present moment. That’s why we decided to try something new: Take a trip with a private travel photographer. We are super excited to have an opportunity to just enjoy our surroundings while someone else documents our once-in-a-lifetime memories.
We’ll be headed to the sunny sands of Mexico as guests of Cantimplora Travel. These guys are the real deal. It’s not easy to trust another photographer to make sure you return home with photos that do justice to your adventures. But scrolling through their photo gallery is enough to see that we’ve got nothing to worry about.
Not sure if traveling with a private travel photographer is right for you?
5 Reasons To Experience Mexico With A Private Travel Photographer
Put Down That Camera And Actually Connect With Your Surroundings
How often do we miss out on the moment at hand because we’re glued to our phones? I’m not even talking about texting or checking your Instagram feed.
Taking photos can be just as much a culprit as any, stealing our highly sought after moments of peace, adventure, laughter, and joy. The constantly nagging fear of missing the perfect shot can easily steal away the precious memories we’re traveling for in the first place.
That’s precisely why a private travel photographer is such a bonus. You don’t have to sacrifice beautiful documentation of your trip. In fact, you can actually enjoy these moments while someone else captures them in breathtaking, raw form.
Discover Unique Places You Would Have Never Found Otherwise
What’s better than a professional photographer following you around transforming your vacation into an enchanting work of art? A professional photographer that knows the ins-and-outs—all the best-kept secrets of a place.
It’s like having a built in vacation guide that totes around with you taking care of all the photography. I mean, can it get much better than this? Remember, this is all about embracing the moment, and the second best thing to being able to put down the camera is being able to put down the map, and the Google searches, and the plans, and the apps.
Because Candid Shots Are Always Better
Those pictures where you’re thinking, “Oh no, do I really look like that when I laugh?!” Yes, these are the best kind of pictures. Excuse the cliche, but it’s true: the real you is always better. Years down the road, looking back on these memories, you will care far less how good you looked, and far more about the story and the moment behind each picture.
The organic moment of beauty and simplicity where you’ve let your guard down enough to finally enjoy the present moment, just in time for someone to snap a picture.
Besides, the best of photographers can make even the most unphotogenic people look like models. ;-)

Ditch Those Blurry iPhone Photos And Leave With Pics You’ll Love
With all the work you’ve already put into making your vacay worthwhile, it only makes sense that investing in quality photos would rise to the top of your list. Don’t get me wrong —iPhone pictures can certainly get the job done if you’re blasting out a picture of your lunch, or your dog looking all cute in that hat you bought him yesterday.
But for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation? We’re talking about a Caribbean oasis, here. You know, like pure-white sands and water so clear you can see your toes. This is the time to invest in pictures that you will love. Quality pictures that are so crisp and clear you’ll be transported back to your favorite trip moments reliving them a thousand times over. Pictures that you’ll actually print out and maybe even *gasp* frame.
After all, as brilliant as our brains can be, eventually, the memories will fade. Investing in high-quality pictures is, reasonably, one of the most important things you can do.
Get Out From Behind The Camera, And Be In A Picture For Once
We all know him. That one person that’s never in pictures with the rest of the crowd because they’re always on the wrong side of the camera. You know, that one person that makes finding a good family or group picture so difficult because there are actually no pictures with them in it.
And we hate to break it to you, but your selfie-stick game isn’t really that strong.
This is YOUR vacation, too. You deserve–just as much as anyone–to strut yo’ stuff along that tropical beach…and finally change your profile picture from 2009. ;-)
Of course, this will be our first time traveling with a professional photographer, so we’ll have to let you know how it went after the trip!

Travel In Mexico With A Private Photographer.
Interesting idea. I’m the one who always has a camera in front of my face. That certainly can hinder the experience. It would be wonderful to simply enjoy the moment and not be worried about “getting the shot”. Questions: How does one find the right photographer? Isn’t it quite costly having the expenses of another person to consider? Can local photographers be found/hired as you go instead of having the photographer travel with you?

Hi Joanne! I am the official photographer for Cantimplora Travel, Casey and Dan here will trust their travel pics on my skills this February! :D My wife (Samantha) and I created this travel company precisely to answer all your questions.
We design travel routes out of our experience traveling Mexico as local profesional travel photographers. We travel with small groups of up to 12 people (which is why the cost of the photographer is not that much), we like to travel off the beaten path, we are adventurous but we like a good bed at the end of the day, Sam is also a great architect and is obsessed with design, so we know pretty nice little hotels where we love to stay.
We encourage our travelers to travel responsively taking care of natural resources and promote the right use of water. And, we give back. A 10% of our profits go to help a local entrepreneur family to fulfill their dreams. Of course our travelers get to meet them on the trip.
All this said, we are Mexican travel lovers and we want to share our knowledge with you, taking you to have contact with local people, showing you the greatness of our culture and above all trying to change the way people travel in Mexico twelve at a time. :D
Hope you’ll join us one day!
Cheers!
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks for all of that great info, Bernardo Buendia!
Joanne, we just returned from our travels with Cantimplora Travel and let me tell you: it exceeded our expectations. Our experience reminded us of all the reasons why we love what we do so much. They were amazing to work with and made our time in Mexico extra special. I hope you were able to see some of the pictures on our Instagram and Facebook, and keep your eyes out for more info on the particulars of this incredible experience. :-)
As this was our first time having a private photographer, and Dan usually takes our pics, I’m not quite sure what the process is for other countries. I can tell you, though, that having a photographer that was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable made all the difference. I would definitely suggest looking for these qualities in any photographer you hire. You might be able to find photographers as you go, but if you’re set on having a private photographer, I wouldn’t take the risk of looking for one along the way. If you connect with a local travel photographer, it’s possible that you could choose to have him or her join you for parts of your trip, if you would prefer to have some time just exploring on your own. As for the cost, I would say that it’s 100% worth it to have the experience of a private travel photographer at least once in your life. As Cantimplora Travel mentioned in the other comment, splitting the cost by going in a group of 12 is a great way to meet awesome new people while saving a bit of money on the photography. All in all, though, I think that if you’re going to invest in a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, it only makes sense to go ahead and make sure you will have quality pictures to remember every moment.
Thanks for all of your awesome questions! If you decide to utilize a private photographer, I would love to hear about your experience. :-)

I’m interested in this because I think it’s a job I’d love. :)
Secondly, I’m the one who is never in the photo because I travel solo! And I’d love someone to take me around to locations I’d miss otherwise. Look forward reading the follow up
Hey, Penny!
If you’re a solo traveler, I can see why this would be the ultimate job for you! :-) What a great addition to solo traveling! You’ll meet awesome new people, find off-the-beaten-track spots, and finally, get to have some amazing pictures of YOU in all your favorite spots. Love it!
If you decide to try it out, I would love to hear about your experience! :-) Best of luck!

I always wanted to be the freedom like you, come to everywhere, take some beautiful pictures and share it to people. Thank you!
I’m not a photographer, but every trip, whether it’s domestic travel, is trying to save at least some of the memories, maybe not beautiful, but really makes me feel good.
