In our recent reflections post, we divulged that in just a few weeks we will be switching things up with one month of travel in Colombia. We were originally going to hop down to Argentina and spend a month in Buenos Aires, but a lovely Colombian gal here in Rio made her home country sound awfully wonderful. To be honest, I already knew that one month in Colombia would be nothing short of amazing—a few years ago I visited Medellin and I’ve been wanting to take Dan back ever since. But what really sold us this time around was the chance to visit Cartagena.
Shortly after booking our tickets, we told our new friend that we would be taking her advice and visiting Medellin and Cartagena. I think she was even more excited than we were! She closed her eyes and passionately talked about the people, the architecture, the beaches, the nightlife, and—most importantly—the food. We knew we had made the right decision.
So you can imagine our excitement when we were asked by a representative of LAN Airways to share their giveaway: a luxurious three-night stay in Cartagena, Colombia—with roundtrip airfare out of Miami!
We can’t wait for our upcoming visit to Cartagena, but we would be even more excited if one of our readers got to go, too! And don’t worry. If you win, you don’t even have to time your free trip to Colombia to coorespond with ours (though how awesome would it be to hang out in Cartagena together?)
Of course we’ll be sharing all of our first-hand travel tips for Cartagena when we are there ourselves, but here’s a bit of a snippet of what you can expect:
A Rich History
Cartagena’s walled Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage site, full of colonial architecture, street musicians, charming hotels, restaurants and bars. Winners of the LAN giveaway will be staying at the luxurious Casa San Agustin, a small hotel actually located within Cartagena’s walled Old Town.
A Romantic Beach Getaway
Cartagena is nestled on the Caribbean Sea. If you tire of exploring winding cobblestone roads and historic monuments, you can also wile the day away on white sandy beaches. The idyllic Islas del Rosario, comprised of 30 islands, is as picture-perfect as it gets.
Romance
Open-air cafes, a burgeoning food scene, riveting nightlife, horse drawn carriages, shady plazas… Cartagena is as romantic a destination as they come.

Great place – we’d enter the contest if we hadn’t already been to Colombia twice. Cartagena just a gorgeous city.

Aw so sorry about that. :( Hopefully we’ll have another giveaway soon that is open to everyone. I think it has to do with the Airline routes, but still, I feel ya!
Cartagena is a gorgeous city. I loved the fresh and exotic fruit and juices sold everywhere and I would recommend trying the street vendor hot dogs – delicious with crushed potato sticks on top. Would recommend doing a day trip to the mud volcano which is a very different experience.
