The United Arab Emirates boasts more than 1,300 kilometers of coastline, and the city of Dubai offers abundant beaches with views of beautiful sparkling water. While bikinis and board shorts are common on the sands of this deeply religious city, they’re only appropriate on the beach in the UAE. If you leave the sand to go to a park or other area, cover your shoulders, cleavage and upper body.

Al Mamzar Beach

Al Mamzar is a blue-flag beach near the edge of the city, which means that it has met stringent standards for water quality, safety, environmental activities and services provided. Mini palm trees and thatched umbrellas dot the beach, providing shade, while the two pools and playground provide ample fun for all ages. There are also picnic and barbecue areas, as well as showers and changing rooms. There are lifeguards on duty, also. You can rent sun loungers and beach umbrellas, and there are a number of cafes and small grocery stores where you can find snacks and sodas. If you’re missing your air-conditioning, consider renting one of the available bungalows for the day. Al Mamzar does observe ladies’ day each week.

Jumeirah Beach Park

Also a blue-flag beach, Jumeirah Beach offers sun-goers shaded picnic areas, barbecue stations, showers, and toilets. Children will enjoy the playground area, while Mom and Dad can rent sunbeds and umbrellas or dine in the various cafes. The lifeguards are on duty until sunset, so you can enjoy the waters without worry. Again there’s a women’s- and-children’s day each week.

Umm Suqeim

If you’re after more than just lazing around under the sun… okay, if you’re after surf lessons, then, this is the beach for you. Also known as Sunset Beach, Umm Suqeim is home to Surf Dubai, which also hosts charity surfing and paddleboard contests. Surf School UAE claims this beach as home, and there’s a park at the far end of the beach area that you can relax in till the surf’s up.

Jumeirah Open Beach

Once popular among visitors from Eastern Europe, Jumeirah Open is also known as Russian Beach. It offers visitors showers, toilets, picnic tables and a volleyball net, along with running and cycling trails. The sands are dotted with manned lifeguard towers, and you can rent lockers and umbrellas at the beach. Several nearby small malls make finding snacks, meals and drinks convenient.

It has to be said, there are some truly amazing beaches in Dubai. There’s only one thing better than being under the sun, and that’s being under the sun in Dubai.
