Welcome to Stockholm!
There’s nothing like the excitement of arriving to a new place. While we have both traveled extensively around Europe, this is our first time to visit it together, which makes it particularly fantastic.
We booked our tickets to Stockholm months ago. It was an impulse buy, based on the fact that flights were ridiculously cheap. We had 24 hours to return the tickets, and we almost did. What were we thinking, going to the most expensive region in the world on our next-to-nothing income?
But then we Googled more photos of Stockholm and decided we just had to make it work.
We’re so glad we did. We love Stockholm. Although it is just about as pricy as everyone warned, it is also absolutely gorgeous. Luckily for us, our favorite activity in Stockholm is free: walking.
I’m pretty sure we walked nearly every street in Stockholm. This is partly because we did AirB&B, stayed at the longest running Inn in Sweden (full review coming soon), and couchsurfed. Each accommodation was in a very different area of town, providing us with great new perspectives – even if we did have to tote around our ridiculous amount of gear on a few too many buses.
We have left Stockholm now for the north, where we’ll be cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and hoping to view the Northern Lights. Be sure to follow us on facebook, twitter, Google+, and Instagram for live updates on the adventure.
We’ll be back to Stockholm in late May. While we couldn’t be more excited for all the new activities we’ll be participating in during the upcoming weeks, we have to say – we’re already looking forward to ambling the city streets once more.
The Streets of Stockholm
Have you visited Stockholm? What’s your favorite European city?
I have to admit Stockholm looks like something special and no, I’ve never been unfortunately. So far one of my favourite European cities (I have many) is Berlin, no matter how many times I go back there I still love it, are you planning on going to Berlin?

We really wanted to go to Berlin, but now we’re housesitting in France for a month so I don’t think we’ll have time on this Europe trip. We’ll definitely be back though to do a full trip through Germany. We’ve never been there!
Looks like a cool city! I have yet to visit Scandinavia but it’s place I’ve been curious about for years. I will certainly check back in to see how you guys like the north

Thanks Cam! So far we are loving the North. It’s quite differently, but absolutely stunning!
I’m glad you guys enjoyed Stockholm and looking forward to reading about your adventures in the North!
I’ve been to Stockholm 8 to 10 times, I just LOOOVE it!
I would advise the best period to visit it would be around midsummer, when nights are bright, weather is fine and flocks of sweeds are puking in the streets after the party scene!
Soooo much fun!!! :)

I wish we could go during summer! From what we’ve heard that’s an amazing time to visit :) Hopefully we see the Northern Lights though while we’re here!
Excellent photos. I am 50% Swedish and would love to visit one day! My aunts and grandmother did a few years ago.

Thank you! Similarly I’m 50% Polish, and I would love to go to Poland to try to trace a bit of my history!
Great photos! This is making me very excited for my summer travel plans to visit Stockholm for the first time!!

YAY! So excited to hear your impressions of the city, too!
Nice photo overview you have in here. I have been in Stockholm several times, and it’s one of my favorite place. I would like to visit some other cites in Sweden as well, one day. All those colorful small houses, sounds super sweet. :)

I love the colorful homes as well! That’s always what I’ve seen in the photos. Now we’re up north and almost all the houses are painted red. I guess it’s the cheapest because people just mix copper dust from the mines with water to get red paint!
Favorite city in Europe ? Munich ! O.K. – thats where I live. But you should see Venice and Rome – if you like Stockholm you will love Italian cities !

Great suggestions! We’ve both been to Venice and Rome and loved them, but we’ve never been to Munich. We would LOVE to go though! We’ll have to ask you for advice when we make it there!
Nope, never been there, but I’ll go there maybe next year. It looks so beautiful, even when covered with some snow. My favourite European city is definitely Prague- charming, cozy and so historical!

Ahh I LOVE Prague, too! I went there for two months when I was 17, and I think it really influenced my love of travel! I’m hoping to take Dan back there soon because he’s never been :)
Very cool guys! I don’t think Stockholm (or anywhere in Scandinavia) is somewhere we’ll be able to visit anytime soon so it’s nice to be able to experience it vicariously through your photos. Really looks beautiful, and given how sweaty gross it is here in Laos, I have to say that even the snow doesn’t look entirely unappealing! :D

Thanks Steph! The cold is actually a nice refresher from the hot weather we’ve been chasing the past few months. I think Stockholm is one of our new favorite cities now. If it wasn’t so annoyingly expensive, it would definitely top our list. Enjoy Laos! That’s another place we know nothing about but would love to visit ;)
Hooray for Stockholm! So glad you enjoyed it there – I can’t wait to visit there again in August (for our first housesit!)

I have never visited Stockholm, but I have to say it does look really pretty. I love the look of the pastry you are holding in your hands. Oh how I miss European pastries!

Umm the cinnamon buns! They are so delicious. Quite different from Cinnabun back home, but I love them so much more :)
Man! You guys have been everywhere recently. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Joshua! Haha it does feel like we have been quite a few places recently. And it looks like we’ll be keeping the pace up for the rest of the year! :)
Ah I loved Stockholm, as I’ve already said! I remember there being a lot of vintage clothes and record stores when I was wandering the streets… Really great photo of that little yellow hut in the snow – I’m sure I also saw it (in the summer) but I can’t for the life of me remember what it is..
Charlie recently posted…Picture This: The Golden Temple at Chi Lin
Thanks Charlie! I think the yellow building you’re talking about is the one from our hotel, Stallmastaregarden. It’s in front of the Haga Park, too :) There are lots of awesome shops as you said! I love browsing through vintage shops, though unfortunately Dan isn’t as keen ;p
Lovely pics! Thank you for sharing! I live in Helsinki and visiting Stockholm once a year has become kind of “must” for our family. We love Stockholm! It’s such a vibrant city. Moderna Museet, Fotografiska Museet (check out their fantastic brunch), Abba Museum (packed but lots of fun), Södermalm (with its trendy shops & cafés) and finally Hermans (a vegetarian restaurant with the best views of the city) are my TOP-5! Enjoy!

Thank you for the great suggestions! We will definitely have to check these out. I’m especially interested in the vegetarian restaurant with views! We’re hoping to visit Helsinki as well, but not sure if we’ll be able to fit it in time-wise yet. We’ll have to be in touch if we do! :)
Glad you liked them! Let me know if you decide to visit Helsinki. :-)

I love Stockholm! Your photos look exactly how I remember it.
I always say Stockholm is my favourite city in Europe that I haven’t lived in. It’s one of the only places I’ve returned to. I had to go back to show my boyfriend, and I can’t wait for the day I can make visit number 3!
Olivia recently posted…Las Fallas: Valencia on fire
Thanks Olivia! I can definitely understand how it would be one of your favorites. We fell in love, too, and we’re really looking forward to a visit in the springtime for a bit of a contrast. Hope you make it back for a 3rd visit soon!
Beautiful photos! Sad we didn’t make it to Stockholm last year…what a pretty capital!

What a great post. The pictures are truly magnificent. It really shows all that Stockholm has to offer. I have always wanted to travel to Stockholm and I hope to have the opportunity in the future. I love to learn the cultures of the areas I travel to, and from this post, Stockholm seems to have plenty! Great post, thank you for sharing!

How gorgeous! I have wanted to go to Stockholm for the longest time. I heard a Swedish guy once say that walking around Stockholm is like walking through a postcard. Clearly he’s right!
Stockholm is absolutely magical and probably one of our favorite big cities! Be sure to bundle up if you’re there in the winter though! :-D
Those photos are stunning. May i know when you visited stockholm? Am heading over there next month and am still wondering how cold the weather will be as i heard its really unpredictable in march.
Thanks Dewimarie! We actually flew into Stockholm on March 10th last year and received snow during our time there. The highest temperature we experienced was maybe 32 degrees F, the coldest was MUCH lower than that so come prepared for cold. Layers will be your friend :-D Stockholm is a fantastic city to explore by foot so we recommend really bundling up! Hope you enjoy your trip :-D
