Winter Wonderland

While most of British Columbia experiences a pretty mild winter (by Canadian standards), Big White and the Kootenay mountains get around 750cm of snow each season.

I took this photo on a hike up Big White to ski some of the slopes before the hill officially opened up. Winter hiking is definitely a challenge, with temperatures plummeting quickly as you increase elevation, but the view from the top and chance to ski your way back down make it worth the effort!

Judi Zienchuk has lived, worked and adventured everywhere from Southeast Asia to Northwest Canada. Currently working as a Museum Assistant, I’m taking some time to get to know another side of the Great White North (for the short few months where the “white” part has melted). You can find her at travvelsized.com and on facebook and twitter!
