20 Postcards From The Garden Island: Kauai, Hawaii

20 Postcards From The Garden Island: Kauai, Hawaii

It’s always great when you have family living in picture-perfect tropical locations. We would know, because we get tons of family and friends who come visit us in Costa Rica—and we absolutely love it! In our case, Dan’s sister is currently calling Oahu home, which means we always have a legitimate excuse to adventure to the always stunning Hawaiian Islands. On our last trip to Hawaii, we explored Maui and Oahu. This time around, we were joining Dan’s family for a vacation to Kauai and The Big Island. Kauai, also known as The Garden Island, is home to the second wettest spot on Earth. It receives a staggering 460+ inches of rain per year. So, it should come as hardly any surprise that it down-poured nearly our entire time on the island! Since we were joining Dan’s family a few days late, we only had two days to try to do Kauai, Hawaii justice. The rain made it a bit more difficult, but we didn’t let it slow us down too much. From waterfalls to beaches to canyons to Hawaiian monk seals, we did our best to experience the best of Kauai in a short time period. There’s no denying the lush beauty of Kauai. Even through the rain, we had an amazing time exploring this beautiful piece of Hawaii. However, in order to show the true beauty of Kauai, we recruited Dan’s sister to add a few of her personal Kauai photos to the mix. We’re sure these postcards from Kauai, Hawaii are going to inspire you to adventure to this wet and wonderful paradise yourself!   20...

Hiking the Royal Arch Trail In Boulder Colorado

Hiking the Royal Arch Trail In Boulder Colorado

Living in Costa Rica, we’ve noticed that the country attracts a lot of native Coloradans—both tourists and expats. It seems the love of the outdoors and adventure activities aligns well with residents of both areas. So it’s hardly any surprise that Colorado immediately caught our attention as a place where we might want to spend extended time in the future. In particular, we love Boulder for its excellent restaurants and bars along with easy access to outstanding hiking and climbing. During our last visit to Boulder, we trekked up to South Boulder Peak, which was absolutely stunning. This time around, we thought we would tackle the Flatirons Trail. While we admittedly didn’t make it to the peak we had originally set out for, we did make it to the top of the Royal Arch Trail, which was pretty epic in its own right.   Hiking the Royal Arch Trail In Boulder Colorado   We started out from our Airbnb, just steps away from the start of Bear Canyon trail. This leads to the Mesa trail which runs parallel to the Flatirons and overlooks the town of Boulder below. If you aren’t keen on a super steep hike, this is a relatively flat alternative to hiking up to the summit. After about 2 miles, the Mesa Trail eventually runs into signs for the Royal Arch trail. This is where the going gets steep and rocky. After about a mile of uphill climbing on rock stairs, you’ll reach the Royal Arch. Pass under the arch and you’ll arrive at the end of the trail, with a rewarding view looking back over Boulder and the...
Planning A Romantic Getaway In Maui

Planning A Romantic Getaway In Maui

It’s no secret that Maui is one of the most romantic destinations in the world. Take the fact that for the last 17 consecutive years, Maui has topped Conde Nast’s list of ‘Best Islands in the U.S.’ Or that there’s a special phrase in Hawaiian—Maui no ka oi—which means: “Maui is the best.”     But what is it about Maui that makes it such a perfect place to celebrate love and ignite romance? We think it has a little bit to do with the Aloha Spirit—and a lot a bit to do with the island’s never-ending list of swoon-worthy activities. Raw natural beauty, picture-perfect beaches, luxury hotels, divine restaurants, off-the-beaten-track adventures…the list goes on and on. It’s the ideal setting to bond as a couple AND to be literally miles away from the stresses of the daily grind. Since we were in Maui for a wedding, there was literally love everywhere—and we couldn’t get enough of it! But apart from that aspect of our trip, we still found Maui oozing with romantic charm around every corner. Whether you’re planning your honeymoon to Maui or simply ready for a romantic rendezvous, here are our top tips for a trip to remember:   Planning A Romantic Getaway In Maui   As noted, our favorite part about Maui is that you can plan a vacation as unique as you and your partner. We say mix-and-match the following components of what we think makes up the perfect couple’s vacation until you create the Maui holiday of your dreams.   Beaches   Because you’re in Maui, obviously. While we normally get bored...
Sunrise At Mount Haleakala, Maui: What You Need To Know

Sunrise At Mount Haleakala, Maui: What You Need To Know

We’ll be honest. When our alarm went off at 4:30am to make the drive up to Mount Haleakala, we nearly rolled over to pretend we couldn’t hear it. Dan had already seen the sunrise from the spectacular volcano on a family trip years and years ago (and admittedly didn’t remember much about it.) We had also been up late with wedding festivities the night before, and our glamping accommodation was enticingly comfortable. Luckily, we had promised a friend we would all go see the sunrise together, so we had just the push we needed to grab a cup of coffee and see what all the fuss was about. Mount Haleakala comes in at a dramatic 10,023 feet. From this staggering height, the sun rises above a layer of clouds before slowly illuminating the lunar-like landscape below. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience, though not necessarily an off-the-beaten-track one.     Just about everyone claims you can’t visit Maui without seeing the Mount Haleakala sunrise. Now that we’ve done it for ourselves, we have to say that we completely agree. The early wake-up call is nothing when compared to the completely mesmerizing sunrise. But that said, there are a few things we wish we would have known before making the trek.   If you’re headed to Maui, here are the top ten things you need to know before seeing the Mount Haleakala sunrise:   1. Be Ready To Share The View     With nearly half a million tourists visiting Mount Haleakala each year, you can pretty much guarantee there will be other people in your sunrise selfie. Plan to...
10 Reasons To Fall In Love With Oahu, Hawaii

10 Reasons To Fall In Love With Oahu, Hawaii

It wasn’t love at first sight when we arrived in Oahu. After a quick and easy plane ride from Maui, we were ready to dive into the legendary island of Jurassic Park and Hawaii Five-O. Instead, we were met with a completely disorganized rental car office (we won’t go into the details) and gridlock rush-hour Honolulu traffic. Way too many hours later we finally arrived at Dan’s sister’s house, much in need of a bite to eat and a quick siesta. Thankfully, we had family to take us under their wing and show us the natural beauty of Oahu that mesmerizes even the most jaded of travelers—once you’re well past the traffic jams and never-ending queues. With a bit of adventure and a touch of Hawaiian spirit, it won’t be long before you, too, fall in love with all Oahu has to offer. Here are ten reasons to get you started:   10 Reasons To Fall In Love With Oahu, Hawaii   1. The Hiking     Whether you’re seeking tucked away waterfalls or expansive vistas, there are heaps of hiking opportunities that promise picture-perfect moments across Oahu. Diamond Head Crater and Manoa Falls are two of the most popular hiking trips; we say, don’t miss the stunning (if somewhat lesser known) Kuliouou Ridge Trail. This intermediate four-mile out and back trail offers some of the best views of Oahu’s valleys and coastline, and was one of our favorite hikes we have done in a long while.       For a comprehensive list of hiking opportunities in Oahu, this is a great compilation.   2. The...
