Hualien is the largest city on the east coast of Taiwan. For this journey it will serve as our base for exploring Taroko Gorge, just an hour scooter ride away. While Hualien is a lovely city, most tourists go there for the surrounding beaches and mountains. If you find yourself in Hualien, we highly recommend staying the night at The Sleeping Boot. We have stayed there at least three or four times now and cannot speak highly enough about the quality and service.
